- BACK TO ADDICTION INFORMATION

How do you define an addiction?

How do you define an addiction? Addictions manifest in any number of ways. When people hear the word ‘addiction’, they often think of drug addiction or alcoholism. Addiction can also take the form of behaviours like gambling addiction or compulsive eating. Does addiction really mean anything – or is it just an excuse for bad behaviour?

In fact, addiction can be clearly defined. Addiction is characterised by compulsive behaviour that the addict is unable to curb, despite the serious consequences. Addicts may recognise that the negative effects of their behaviour far outweigh any benefits and yet still be unable to stop.

Far from being the natural outcome of a hedonistic or irresponsible lifestyle, or simply indicative of a lack of willpower, addiction can be defined as a compulsive disorder requiring expert treatment.
This explains why many are able to drink alcohol socially without it seriously affecting their lives, or occasionally visit a casino, while some people becoming severely dependent on alcohol or gambling, with devastating consequences.

Addiction can be ruinous to the addict’s health and mental well-being and undermine relationships. Addiction can also be devastating to the family and friends of an addict. Indeed, addiction can be defined as a behaviour that the addict appreciates is harmful and yet is unable to stop.

It is important to define an addiction properly in order to understand the appropriate course of treatment. Realising that any addiction is a form of compulsive behaviour caused by serious emotional and psychological difficulties help addicts and those around them to appreciate the need for counselling and a comprehensive addiction treatment programme.

Addiction is a serious problem. It cannot simply be cured overnight. However, with professional treatment, addiction can be successfully managed and addicts can go on to live healthy and productive lives.
