Overeating Treatment and Compulsive Overeating Counselling
Compulsive overeating disorder is an eating disorder which is as serious as bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa and usually requires compulsiveovereating treatment to arrest the addiction. Many look down upon those with this illness as being weak and greedy, yet the illness is one and the sameas bulimia and anorexia - simply with different symptoms. A compulsive overeater will experience feelings of immense shame and guilt, more so than associated with anorexia or bulimia, which needs to be dealt with incompulsive overeating counselling.

Compulsive overeating treatment is offered at Oasis Counselling Centre in the form of compulsive overeating counselling, a healthy eating plan andregular exercise. Our highly qualified and extensively experienced team ofqualified addiction counsellors and therapists provide compulsive overeating counselling on an individual and group level. These sessions are where themany psychological problems of a compulsive overeater can be dealt with in a caring and nurturing environment. Healthy and realistic eating plans are assigned by a dietician experienced in the treatment of eating disorders.

A compulsive overeater has an emotional relationship with food; however unlike the anorexic and bulimic need for control, the compulsive overeater submerges themselves in deep self-hatred which they numb with binges.Consuming massive amounts of food has an almost narcotic effect, ridding themselves of these uncomfortable feelings for a short while. Compulsive overeating leads to a cycle of abuse - the sufferer feels low selfesteem, especially caused by their physical appearance and turns to food to escape these intense feelings, which leads to more weight gain and even worse self- esteem and more bingeing.

Symptoms of compulsive overeating include: morbid obesity and consistentweight gain, secretive eating, stealing food and eating little in public whilst eating large amounts in secret. The physical complications of compulsive overeating include: heart problems, diabetes, painful limbs, severe stretch marks and even death through heart attacks or strokes.

Compulsive overeating treatment at a registered rehabilitation centre in South Africa is recommended for anyone suffering from compulsive overeating disorder, as the condition is a disease similar to any other addiction -uncontrollable, unstoppable and progressive. However, with overeating treatment in the form of compulsive overeating counselling combined with ahealthy diet and lifestyle, the condition can be managed.

At Oasis, a healthy lifestyle incorporating exercise is encouraged as is a 12 Step recovery programme as used in the Eating Disorders Anonymous andOvereaters Anonymous Programmes. These are daily programmes of recovery, enabling a compulsive overeater to remain abstinent from their disordered behaviour, especially when accompanied by overeating treatmentsuch as compulsive overeating counselling.
