Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse
back to additional information >>
Alcohol abuse can be the precursor to alcoholism, a chronic and destructive disease affecting millions of people today. Oasis Counselling Centre offers professional alcohol addiction counselling, a detoxification programme and a 12 step recovery programme, helping clients to begin their lives as sober alcoholics.
Alcohol Abuse
Alcohol abuse refers to the misuse or overuse of alcohol and the pattern of behaviour associated with drinking. Negative consequences typically result, and the effects are detrimental to relationships, family life, work and finance. Problematic drinking habits develop when alcohol is used to self-medicate, to relieve anxiety and stress, or to numb emotional troubles.
Alcoholism
Alcoholism is a progressive disease that becomes more severe over time. It refers to a physical dependence on alcohol, characterised by withdrawal symptoms such as shaking, perspiring and nausea. Strong cravings occur and alcoholics experience increased tolerance and loss of control of alcohol consumption. Signs of alcoholism include drastic changes in demeanour when under the influence of alcohol, and the occurrence of alcohol-related amnesia or blackouts.
Alcohol abuse and alcoholism develop as a result of many interconnected factors. If there is a history of alcoholism in a family, one does have a genetic predisposition to the disease. Upbringing, lifestyle and social environments play a big role in the development of drinking problems, as do psychological and emotional factors. Not all alcohol abusers become alcoholics but they are exposed to the risk.
Treating alcohol addiction and detoxification is extremely serious and should be carried out by qualified professionals. Oasis Counselling Centre offers ethical and holistic alcohol rehabilitation. Intensive therapy with addiction recovery counsellors helps clients to deal with their pasts and examine the factors that will threaten their sobriety in the present and future.
