Detoxification Programme - Oasis Drug Detox Facilities
Addicts seeking treatment for alcohol addiction or drug addiction may be required to complete a detoxification programme in professional detox facilities before qualifying for admission to a rehabilitation centre. Many alcohol or drug treatment facilities require this as the other patients in the establishment will be abstinent from drugs and alcohol. Allowing a person into such a facility who is still under the influence of substances will be upsetting and traumatic for other patients and may possibly endanger their sobriety.
A person who is physically dependant on a substance and ceases the use of the substance will enter into withdrawal - the body's reaction to the cessation of the substance. Withdrawal can be fatal: the shock to the body and the symptoms associated with it can be so stressful that a person can die or experience serious complications. For this reason medication is often used during a detoxification programme to control an addict's withdrawal symptoms and wean them off the substance over a period of time.
A detoxification programme is usually required for addicts who are dependant on physically addictive drugs. Heroin and any other opiates, barbiturates and tranquilisers are physically addictive and will require a person addicted to them to enter detox facilities. Alcohol is also physically addictive, requiring supervision at detox facilities. This is to avoid the possibility of withdrawal fits; identical in nature to epileptic fits.
A detoxification can be an incredibly painful and agonizing experience for a drug addict. Medication will help to ease their pain but never provide the fix they are seeking. The incredible compulsion to use drugs and escape their uncomfortable feelings is so powerful that attempts to escape the terrible pains of withdrawal by consuming more drugs will be strong. For this reason, safe and secure drug detox facilities are important as they provide an environment which is equipped to cope with withdrawing drug addicts and the reactions they may exhibit.
After the sufferer has detoxed or is coming to the end of the detoxification programme, the facility will often help to guide them into a rehabilitation facility for the treatment of drug dependency.
Oasis Counselling Centre offers a detoxification programme if deemed necessary for patients requesting admission to rehab at our drug treatment facilities. Meet our qualified addiction counsellors, find out about our 12 Step recovery programme.
