| Drug addiction counselling Quitting drugs is a crucial step on the road to recovery from drug addiction. But treating addiction is an on-going process that should be overseen by professionals. This is not a sign of weakness. Addiction is a disease, and like any other serious disease successful treatment of addiction involves professional care. Drug addiction counselling helps addicts to confront the psychological issues underlying their addiction. A trusted counsellor is a valuable partner in recovering from addiction. Addicts frequently experience a great sense of relief when they have an outlet to express some of their personal doubts and concerns that have been a source of emotional stress. Counselling can either take the form of one-to-one counselling sessions, or group counselling. Both have advantages, and an experienced counsellor should determine whether an addict would most benefit from one or the other of these therapies, or a combination of both. Counselling helps addicts to develop healthy routines and to gain better self-understanding - enabling addicts to cope better with difficult situations. Drug addiction counselling cannot do the work for the addict. Counselling can create a safe and supportive environment, and provide addicts with essential coping skills. But it is still up to addicts to admit they have a problem and to make the effort to change. The counsellor must offer support and assistance, but the addict has a duty to accept that support and work with the counsellor or group towards lasting progress. Members of a counselling group have a duty to support each other and give other members the encouragement they need to deal with addiction.
