Drug Addiction - Why do some people become addicted to drugs while others do not

Drug Addiction

There are many theories as to why some people suffer from drug addiction and others do not. The difference is dependent on the person and a variety of factors including biological make-up (genes), the environment and their development. Most importantly, it is dependent on whether the person has the disease of addiction.

Addiction is a progressive and incurable disease. It can be arrested through abstinence from substances and the application of a daily programme of recovery. This should include drug addiction counselling by addiction recovery counsellors initially. Some believe that the disease is present from birth, others believe that it is caused by experiences during development, and others believe it is a combination of the two. Whatever the cause of the disease, it is this illness that renders an addict incapable of easing their drug addiction and other compulsive behaviours, unlike those without the disease that are able to "just stop".

There are many drug users in the world. However, not every one of them is a drug addict. People abuse drugs regularly, especially over the festive season. Many young adults experiment with the abuse of drugs and alcohol, yet many do not continue using once they have settled down into adult life. However, those with the disease of addiction will continue to use and slip into drug addiction, despite the many negative consequences to themselves and those around them.
