Life After Alcohol and Drug Rehab

Addiction Counselling

An alcohol and drug rehab such as Oasis Counselling Centre is a safe place for recovery to begin. Drug treatment centres are inhabited by fellow recovering addicts who understand the struggle of addiction. Furthermore, qualified addiction counsellors assist addicts in working through and managing their disorders with drug addiction counselling. Clients are fed properly, kept sheltered and protected. However, once a person's stay in rehab is over, what's next?

Many rehabs use the Minnesota model as an addiction recovery programme. This model classifies addiction as an all-encompassing disease that is progressive and incurable. The Minnesota Model uses the Twelve Step recovery programme as a recovery method, accompanied by counselling and group therapy. Many Twelve Step fellowships exist in South Africa, and are aimed at dealing with all types of addiction. Rehabs send their clients to meetings, yet the fellowships have no affiliation with any rehabs.

Once a client leaves an alcohol and drug rehab, the continued working of a daily programme of recovery, combined with leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle, is crucial to continued abstinence. It is incredibly beneficial for those leaving a rehab to enter a secondary treatment programme, such as Solar House rehabilitation centre, part of Oasis Counselling Centre's treatment programme.

Regular attendance at meetings, as well as a thorough working of the daily programme of recovery offered by the Twelve Steps, is a very supportive way of life to adopt. It enables addicts to cope with day-to-day problems and achievements without needing to escape their feelings. Oasis Counselling Centre helps clients to begin to work a Twelve Step recovery programme whilst in our care, helping to create a support structure and tools for when the time comes for them to leave our alcohol and drug treatment centre.

For some time after leaving an alcohol and drug rehab, it is advisable that a discharged client remain in regular contact with the rehab and the members of any Twelve Step fellowships they attend only - old friends are very much a trigger for old behaviours. We offer After Care sessions for support and assistance with the adjustment to life after Oasis. Attendance at a minimum of three meetings per week is recommended, as is finding a sponsor to work with closely on the Twelve Steps.

The cravings and desire to use drugs and alcohol will gradually become less and less if a programme is adhered to after leaving an alcohol and drug rehab. There is always the chance of relapse, but if a recovering addict has tools in place for times they may find themselves craving drugs, relapse can be avoided. As a recovering addict becomes more stable and progresses in their recovery, regular attendance at meetings and working the Twelve Steps are still crucial to remaining abstinent.
