Self-harm is rarely related to suicide. It is the deliberate action of harming one’s body through cutting, burning, scratching and punching or head butting immovable objects. The sufferer achieves an emotional high from the harming process. Afterwards they can feel guilt and shame; to alleviate these feelings they may self-harm again. Self-harm progressively worsens until the sufferer needs help from a treatment centre.

On arrival at Oasis the patient will be assessed physically and psychologically. Instruments related to their self-harming will be removed from their possession.
